In today’s commercial and retail facilities, it is important that the regulated voltage and backup power is supplied to protect critical operations and data. In addition to I.T. equipment in general, applications include surveillance cameras, security systems, and network communications. For retail, battery backup for point of sale protection is a must, including the network hardware responsible for communicating sales transactions.

Building automation, control, and monitoring are crucial because they allow facility engineers to control the building’s climate and energy usage, and understand the status of critical systems. Power quality and reliable battery backup are required. In addition, line voltage regulators are a solution when variable frequency drives (VFDs) are shutting down due to under-voltage conditions, or their controls are being damaged by over-voltage conditions.

DC Power / Metal Finishing

The metal finishing market encompasses applications such as plating, electro-galvanizing, and anodizing. Chemicals are used to coat metal with a protective and/or decorative finish using an electrolytic process. Another application is to apply a thin layer of paint to a metal part by immersing it in a water-based solution containing a paint emulsion. This process is commonly known as e-coating. In all of these applications, DC power is applied to the metal, which causes the chemical or paint to condense onto the part.

Education

Keeping schools and educational facilities running efficiently is critical in today’s society, and power quality plays an important role. Since computers and other electronic devices are now commonplace within classrooms and other school venues, there is certainly a requirement for clean power.

To provide protection from electrical noise and voltage transients, “clean power” panelboards are often installed to feed computer lab rooms, and to protect sensitive A/V equipment within the performing arts center. Each panelboard is supplied power from a multi-shielded, K-13 rated, computer-grade isolation transformer, typically together with a surge protection device (SPD).

In addition to clean power, uninterruptible power is crucial for school security systems. These systems include video surveillance cameras covering campus entry points and hallways, as well as outdoor gathering spaces and parking lots. Battery backup is also needed for critical systems that allow the school to communicate both on campus and with local police and fire departments.

Emergency Lighting

We’ve defined Emergency Lighting as one of the markets we serve. In fact, it represents a life safety requirement which is mandated by NFPA 101 – 7.9.2 for safe egress from any building, structure, or public space. This encompasses a long list of facilities and venues including schools, universities, sports arenas, theaters, shopping malls, hospitals, parking structures, industrial buildings, military bases, correctional facilities, and more.

To serve this market, we design and manufacture emergency lighting inverters that are fully compatible with all lighting fixture types, including LED. All of our standard 90-minute inverters are listed as UL 924 “Emergency Lighting Equipment,” C-UL listed to CSA standards, and are NFPA 101 compliant. Our inverters provide automatic self-testing and logging of the results per NFPA 101 – 7.9.3.1.3., and remote monitoring is available via BACnet, Ethernet TCP/IP, or MODBUS. Each inverter model is easy to install, and many boast of an industry-leading small cabinet footprint!

In addition to our inverter products, we also offer a UL 1008 listed automatic transfer switch to allow locally-controlled or dimmable lighting fixtures to function as essential emergency lighting.

We provide single phase and three phase emergency power solutions for egress lighting!

Entertainment

The entertainment market is booming, and sophisticated electronics are being used to give us the experience we want. From the largest theaters, concert halls, casinos, and sports venues to broadcast studios and audio/video production, clean, noise-free power is required. Why? Electrical noise is a high frequency, low energy signal that travels on the power and ground lines of an electrical distribution system. This noise can be easily coupled into the signal path of digital circuits causing data corruption. In addition, this noise can compromise the audio and visual experience.

Stable voltage can be just as critical. This is why we incorporate line voltage regulation into many of our power conditioning systems. Over-voltage conditions and voltage spikes can damage sensitive electronics, as well as the stadium-sized LED screens and marquee signs we love to see.

Government

At Controlled Power Company, we understand that the government market is vast and has diverse power quality needs. Local, regional, and federal government facilities all must be recognized. Our resume reflects decades of experience and hundreds of unique applications.

Industrial

Today’s industrial processes have become incredibly complex due to automation, computerization, greater equipment repeatability and reproducibility, and detailed quality control metrics. Many industrial facilities and manufacturing plants use variable frequency drives, electric motors, and other types of production components which contribute to a harsh electrical environment … in other words, “bad power.”

Such an electrical environment presents unique challenges when providing “clean, regulated power” to critical loads, in addition to providing battery backup. Often, the high-powered industrial equipment will interfere with vulnerable electronic controls (e.g. SCADA, DCS, and ICS, which all interface with PLCs, RTUs, sensors, and telemetry). Mass Transit

Mass transit using trains and subways can be one of our greatest conveniences or biggest frustrations! We want to be on time, and more importantly, we need to be safe. Power quality and battery backup systems play an important role in meeting these two objectives.

Oil & Gas

The oil and gas market encompasses drilling sites, petrochemical plants, refineries, and pipeline distribution. In all cases, critical process controls exist together with telemetry electronics requiring clean, stable, uninterrupted power.

For many drilling applications, the uninterruptible power system (UPS), process controls, and telemetry electronics are installed within the same environmentally controlled modular container. We address this type of installation by designing UPS models that require only front access for installation, operation, and service. In addition, longer battery runtimes are available to meet the 4 – 6 hours of backup time often required due to the remote location of the drilling sites.

Mining

In the mining industry, most control functions are fully automated, including critical conveyor systems. Battery backup for the controlling server is a must … but not just any UPS will do! Available voltage sources are often distorted by VFDs and other loads. A rugged UPS with isolation and a high tolerance to bad incoming power (without switching to battery) is the answer.
